The USDA defines Low Food Insecurity to have reduced quality, variety or desirability of the foods in their diet. Very Low Food Insecurity adds in hunger (multiple indications of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake).
14.5% of Americans are categorized as Low Food Insecurity, and another 3.5% Very Low.
The causes are many, and most of them are the every day issues we are all too familiar with. We believe that regardless of the cause, food insecurity should not be the result. If we can provide those in need with adequate nutritious food we improve our community as those in need work to solve their challenges.
The County of Sonoma Count released data (see below) in 2020 stating 1/3 of Sonoma County were impacted by lack of adequate food. That's 60,000 households that didn't have the funds to buy adequate foods for their families.
